A rather unique photographic record of the funeral of an American, taking place in North Otterington, England in 1918. The funeral of Mortimer Park Crane was attended by civilians, and military personnel in both American and British uniforms, including those of the Royal Flying Corps. Mortimer Park Crane, was killed in a "Flying Accident" on 15 May 1918, whilst serving with the Royal Air Force. The transcript from the memorial stone, indicated that Crane's body was repatriated to Philadelphia in 1921. Additionally, there maybe a connection between Crane and the Canadian Air Ace who served with the Royal Flying Corps, HOIDGE (Reginald Theodore Carlos - Captain - RFC/RAF). As the Crane images came with a photograph of Sir William Orpen's painting of Hoidge. |
